The summer holidays are well underway, and while there’s still plenty of time to enjoy them, many families are already looking ahead to the months ahead.
School uniforms, new shoes, lunches, childcare and after-school activities can all add to household costs. Taking a few minutes now to check that you’re receiving all the financial support you’re entitled to could make a real difference when September arrives.
Whether your circumstances have changed recently or you’ve simply not reviewed your entitlements for a while, summer is the perfect time for a financial check-up.
Child Benefit
If you’re responsible for bringing up a child under the age of 16, or under 20 if they’re continuing in approved education or training, you may be entitled to Child Benefit.
Even if your income means you choose not to receive the payments because of the High Income Child Benefit Charge, it’s still worth making a claim. This protects your National Insurance record and helps ensure your child receives their National Insurance number automatically when they’re eligible.
If you’ve recently welcomed a new child into your family, don’t forget to submit your claim if you haven’t already.
Has Your Child Turned 16 Since Last September?
If your child has turned 16 at any point since September 2025, now is the time to check your Child Benefit.
Child Benefit normally ends on 31 August following your child’s 16th birthday unless HMRC is told they’re continuing in approved education or training.
If they’re returning to sixth form, college or another approved course this September, make sure you update HMRC before the end of August. Doing so will help ensure your Child Benefit continues without interruption.
If you’ve already confirmed their education plans with HMRC, there’s nothing further you need to do.
Check Your Free School Meals Eligibility
Your family’s circumstances can change from one year to the next, which means your eligibility for free school meals may also change.
If you’re receiving Universal Credit or your household income has changed recently, it’s worth checking whether your children now qualify. Even where younger children already receive universal infant free school meals, making a qualifying application can help schools receive additional funding to support pupils.
Help With Childcare Costs
If you pay for childcare during the holidays, before or after school, or through registered childcare providers, financial support may be available.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for:
- Tax-Free Childcare
- Universal Credit childcare support
- Government-funded childcare hours for eligible children
Each scheme has different qualifying rules, so it’s worth reviewing your options regularly.
Has Your Income Changed?
Many family benefits are affected by your household income.
If you’re self-employed, run a limited company or have experienced changes to your earnings during the year, your entitlement may be different from previous years.
Making informed decisions about your income, salary or dividends can sometimes have wider financial implications beyond your tax bill. A review before the new school year begins can help you understand where you stand and avoid unexpected surprises.
Take a Few Minutes to Review Your Finances
Family finances rarely stay the same for long.
Changes to your work, income, childcare arrangements or family circumstances can all affect the support available to you.
A quick review each summer can help make sure you’re receiving everything you’re entitled to before September arrives.
