What is a UTR?

A UTR is a 10-digit number Unique Taxpayer Reference. You will automatically be sent it when you:

  • register for Self Assessment
  • set up a limited company

Where do I find my UTR?

Your UTR will be on previous tax returns and any other documents received from HMRC and will be called your ‘UTR’, ‘Unique Taxpayer Reference’ or simply ‘reference’. You can also find your UTR in your HMRC online account.

If you cannot find your UTR

To find your personal UTR you can find this on the free HMRC App or your Personal Tax Account. If you cannot access these services please call the HMRC advice for Self Assessment help line which is 0300 200 3310.

If you have a limited company, you can request your Corporation Tax UTR online. HMRC will send it to the business address that’s registered with Companies House.
